Louisiana Early ~ Satsuma Citrus, Basil and Mint

The early history of Louisiana’s satsuma orange dates back to the early 19th century when it was introduced to the region by Japanese immigrants. By the mid-1800s, the fruit became a staple in local agriculture. In the 1930s, LSU researchers began experimenting with different satsuma cultivars, leading to the development of the “Louisiana Early” variety, which became known for its early harvest in the fall and exceptional flavor. This satsuma is particularly prized for its easy-to-peel skin, sweetness, and resilience to the local environment. The LSU-developed Louisiana Early satsuma helped solidify the state’s reputation for producing high-quality citrus fruits.
